Morte Lake Trail
is located on Quadra Island in the Discovery Islands of BC. A pleasant
forest hike of 7.2 km on the South Shore loop, with good views of
Morte Lake, the southwest slopes of Chinese Mountains and glimpses
of the mountains of Vancouver Island.
Travelling in a counter-clockwise direction, the trail follows a gentle
incline above McKercher Creek for 2.3 km to the east end of Morte
Lake, which takes about 30 minutes. This trail is a popular fishing
path to Morte Lake.
Stay to the
left at the fork just before the lake, and follow the trail to a
small marshy area (bridged) at a sandy beach at the southernmost
end of the lake. The trail rises again over rock ridges before dropping
sharply to Mud Lake.
At times the Mud Lake and Reed Lake sections can be wet, and if
so, Walcan Road can be easily accessed from the west end of each
of these lakes. Allow about 2 hours.
From Heriot
Bay, on Quadra Island,
take the Hyacinthe Bay Road for 6 km, turn west on Walcan Road and
continue for 700m to the main parking area for Morte Lake Trail.
